Standing on the mouth of the Thames the oldest building in Canvey partly dates back to the 16th century and used by Dickens in Great Expectations as the pub on the remote marsh. In the 18th century it had been known as 'The World's End'. In its day the inn was a popular haunt for the island's smugglers and notorious for its illegal bare-knuckle fights which took place roughly were the pub car park now stands. The 1953 North Sea flood killed 58 of the islanders. |
