The four girls shown above were caught together stealing iron and all sentenced to 7 days hard labour. These photographs are of convicted criminals in Newcastle between 1871 - 1873. Newcastle City Gaol and House of Correction. Particulars of criminals convicted of a crime specified in section 20 of the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871 and reported to the Secretary of State as being imprisoned in Newcastle Gaol. Newcastle Gaol in Carliol Square closed March 1925. |
