Richard Cobden, plus his brothers and sisters, were all baptised in St. James' church. Many years later, when Richard returned to live at Dunford, he and his family would walk into to Heyshott to worship here. Cobdens daughter, Jane, recalled that in the earlier years there was no resident vicar and the parson rode on horseback from Stedham often meeting the family on the road.
Cobdens regular pew is marked by this plaque, designed by Graily Hewitt, and placed here by his daughters Jane and Ellen on 3 July 1896.
