Earliest parts of parish church 11th century - Mentioned in the Domesday Book

From the end of April 2007 Cocking Parish Church will become the Church of St Catherine of Siena, Cocking.
An ancient downland church which has had no known name for all of its 900 years is finally to get one.
The 11th century Cocking Church has always been simply Cocking Church. But at the end of this month it will become 'the Church of St Catherine of Siena, Cocking', formally dedicated to a 14th century Italian woman who used her comparatively short life to serve the sick, the poor and the imprisoned.
Although no one knows quite why, one of the church's two medieval bells is inscribed with St Catherine's name and the congregation has now decided to adopt her as their patron saint.
