Petworth is a small town and civil parish in West Sussex, England. Located at the junction of the A272 east-west road from Heathfield to Winchester and the A283 running north - south. Chichester is 12 miles to the south. Included in the Petworth parish is the settlements of Byworth and Hampers Green.
Mentioned in the Domesday Book it is best known as the location of the stately home of Petworth House, the grounds, known as Petworth Park are thought of by many as Capability Brown's most famous work. The House and its grounds were given to the National Trust in 1947 but remains the home of Lord and Lady Egremont.
There was once a railway line between Pulborough, Petworth and Midhurst, but this was closed to passenger use in 1955, and finally to freight in 1966. The old Petworth station is now a hotel and B&B.
Petworth Fair, one of the last remaining street fairs in the south, which dates back to 1189, is held annually on 20th November in Market Square.
