LINCH West Sussex Parish Index Linch is a civil parish in West Sussex. It is a small hamlet 3 miles north of Stedham, 5 miles north-west from Midhurst. In the Domesday Book it was called Lince. It has an 18th century church dedicated to St Luke. The medieval parish of Linch consisted of 2 parts: the main settlement was round the church, whose site is now marked by Linch Farm, and extending on to the Downs which rise steeply above it to the south; entirely separate and distant some 7 miles to the north, and stretching northwards for 2 miles to reach the Hampshire border, was the Wealden outlier of the manor, probably corresponding to the 'woodland yielding 10 swine' in 1086. The parish was never populous; in 1428 there were only 6 householders plus the rector. 1841 census shows 69 names - - - see returns copy The population in 1851 was 90. The population in 1861 was 111. The population in 1901 was 101. The population in 1911 was 96. In the 2001 census there was a population of 78 & 29 households. War Memorial No Memorial in the Church of St. Luke but there is a memorial cross that stands on a little green 300 yards north of the turning to Milland. The Memorial includes the small areas of Redford and Wardley. 10 men recorded with Surnames and Christian names only. click here for more details Linch, Roll Of Honour 'Linch' A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 4: The Rape of Chichester (published 1953) A St Lukes church is shown on the 2 maps below - click image
