Petworth Prison

The notorious Petworth Jail was opened in 1788 to deliver hard labour and solitary confinement for mostly petty crimes. Vagrancy being the most common crime of the inmates. Employed in Petworth 'gaol', as a method of punishment, was the 'treadwheel' responsible for many deaths.
