The FITTLEWORTH Guide
WEST SUSSEX
Fittleworth and the surrounding areas.
A virtual guide for visitor and residents.
Fittleworth is a West Sussex village on the A283 Petworth to Pulborough road. Its southern boundary is the River Rother.
The village has two churches, one Evangelical and St. Marys Anglican church. There is a stores, post office, a primary school and the Swan Inn which in 1925, became home to and one of the first meeting places of the Ancient Order of Froth Blowers.
The explorer and broadcaster Duncan Carse lived in Fittleworth for over 40 years until he died in May 2004. It was also the home of the composer Edward Elgar for a number of years. Sculptor Alan Thornhill spent his childhood, between 1925 and 1936 here, his family building 'Rotherwood'. More can be read in a well put together article by Jon Edgar.
Fittleworth had a railway station until 1963, on a branch line of the now closed Midhurst Railways.
In the 2001 census the parish had 405 households with a total population of 931.
Fittleworth is recorded in 1168 as Fitelwurda, 1279 Fyteleworth, 1438 Fetilworth & 1488 Fitelworthe.

The Ancient Order of Froth Blowers
In 1925 the Swan became home to and one of the first meeting places of the Ancient Order of Froth Blowers, which by 1928 had over 700,000 members. The Swan is still called 'Vat No.0'.
