Five Albanians jailed following kidnapping
Three men convicted of conspiracy to kidnap a man in Brighton last year have been sentenced to a total of almost 30 years in prison.
It follows a week-long trial at Lewes Crown Court in December, after which the jury returned guilty

Albanian kidnap
verdicts on Ilir Hasa and Saimir Nezaj, both aged 24. Nezaj was also found guilty of threatening or intimidating a witness and possession with intent to supply class A drugs and fraud, which related to a separate offence.
Redon Sadria, 19, and Ardi Murataj, 20, the victim of the kidnap, had admitted possession with intent to supply class A drugs.
On Thursday 28 January, Ilir Hasa was jailed for eight years for kidnap.
Saimir Nezaj was sentenced to eight years for kidnap, 18 months consecutively for threatening a witness, two years for possession with intent to supply class A drugs, and 18 months concurrently for a fraudulent documents offence - a total of 11-and-a-half years.
Gazmend Mula got six-and-a-half years for kidnap and three-and-a-half years for possession with intent to supply class A drugs- a total of 10 years.
All five defendants will be deported at the end of their sentences
The judge also agreed all orders for forfeiture of and destruction of £16,500 cash, drugs and computers seized by police.
On Friday 29 January, Ardi Murataj - also known as Tony Kurt - and Redon Sandria were each jailed for two-and-a-half years for their involvment in the supply of drugs.
The court heard that just before 6pm on Sunday 12 April 2015 a 19-year-old man was attacked by four men and then bundled into a Vauxhall Astra in Princes Terrace, Brighton. The Vauxhall involved in the kidnapping belonged to Albanian man Hasa. Police enquiries led to Hasa and another Albanian man Mula who were arrested two days later and charged.
Two other men were charged with drug offences and in September, Nezaj was also charged with conspiracy to kidnap.
The Albanian victim came forward and contacted police after he saw video appeals put out by the force in English and Albanian

Murder enquiry has been launched following a fire in Chidham

The post mortem for the couple, who have not been formally identified, took place yesterday and revealed they both died from neck and head injuries.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to the property at 8.35am to reports of the bungalow alight. Sadly a man and woman, now understood to be in their 70s, were found in the property and were declared dead at the scene.

It appears the couple were attacked before their home was set alight. We are supporting the family of the couple and are working with colleagues from the fire service along with forensic and crime scene investigators to establish the circumstances.
We are waiting to talk to a man who is being treated in hospital for severe burns and we believe this may be connected. Caution over buying festival tickets
Sussex Police are asking residents to be cautious over ticket sales site for a festival near Brighton.
The police and Brighton and Hove City Council have become aware of a website that is promoting an event called 'The Eastwood Festival'. This is advertised as a Russian rock, two day event located in the Ovingdean area.
At this time, neither Sussex Police nor Brighton and Hove City Council have been approached in relation to the safety and licensing of such an event nor have our attempts to contact the organisers been successful. Those thinking of attending this event and purchasing tickets should consider this position prior to purchasing tickets, until the validity of the event can be confirmed and relevant licences have been granted.
The event is being advertised at a cost of £200 for attending the two day event and the police and council are currently unable to confirm that this event will be either safe to attend or indeed will go ahead as the appropriate licenses have not been authorised.
Chief Inspector Chris Veale of Sussex Police said: "Until we are able to ascertain the validity of both this website and the event we would ask residents who are thinking of attending to exercise caution and take our advice into account before providing your bank details for payment. We will continue to attempt to make contact with event organisers and land owners and will provide more information as and when it comes to light."
Sussex Police and the local authority are working together with partners to identify the organisers of this event and ascertain more information.
Be cautious about buying tickets for advertised event near Brighton

Lancing driver convicted of causing death by dangerous driving
A Lancing man who was driving a van which left the road and crashed into a tree, killing one of its occupants, has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road traffic collision.
Michael Everson, 32, unemployed, of Gravelly Crescent, Lancing, was sentenced after appearing at Chichester Crown Court on Tuesday, 16 February. In addition to being jailed he was banned from driving for six years and must take a mandatory driving test before regaining his licence.
Everson had been at the wheel of a red Vauxhall Movano van shortly before 1am on Saturday, 13 June 2015, when it left the road in Offington Avenue in Salvington, Worthing, and struck a tree near its junction with Offington Drive.
Passenger Samuel Frost, 27, of Chiltern Crescent, Salvington, Worthing, died at the scene. Everson and three other passengers - one of whom was Mr Frost's twin brother, a 32-year-old man from Goring and a 27-year old man from East Worthing, all sustained minor injuries.
Everson fled the scene on foot but was traced and arrested.

Michael Everson
Sergeant Rob Baldwin, of the Sussex Road Policing unit, said: "Our investigation found that Michael Everson had consumed a mixture of alcohol, cocaine and cannabis in the hours prior to the collision. At the time of the collision he was also carrying four people in the front passenger seats of the van which were only designed to carry two people. His decision to drive the van that evening in such an intoxicated state, and with so many passengers, was highly irresponsible and ultimately led to the tragic death of Samuel Frost. The gravity of this case was further aggravated by the fact the Everson ran away from the scene in an attempt to evade responsibility for his actions."

Reflected sunlight sparks bedroom fire in Fernhurst
Crews from Midhurst and Haslemere were called to a detached house on Hawksfold Lane East in Fernhurst, just after 4pm yesterday.
The owners returned home to hear their smoke detector activating and smoke coming from the first floor of their property.
The couple, in their 70s, sensibly left the property and called 999.
On arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the fire using hose reels preventing it from spreading to the rest of the house.
The fire is believed to have started when reflected sunlight from a dressing table mirror ignited a candle on the bedroom windowsill which subsequently caught the curtains alight.
Watch Manager Nigel Gamblen from Midhurst Fire Station said afterwards: "This may sound like a freak incident but actually it isn't uncommon. We've attended fires started in this way by mirrors and ornaments before, particularly during the winter months when the sun is very low".

Jeffrey-Shaw jailed for 17 years
A man who was found guilty of the manslaughter of student Janet Muller in Ifield last year has been jailed for 17 years. Christopher Jeffrey-Shaw, 28, of Lakeside, Beckenham, Kent, had denied murdering the 21-year-old University of Brighton student from Germany who was studying at the Eastbourne campus.
A jury at Guildford Crown Court found him not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter on Monday 22 February. He was sentenced today.
Janet had been a patient at Millview Hospital, a mental health unit in Hove, since 3 March but had absconded twice on 12 March, the last time around 10pm on that evening.
On the afternoon of 13 March 2015, a Volkswagen Jetta was set on fire in a country lane off Rusper Road, Ifield, near Crawley and the body of Janet was found in the boot. She had been beaten and died in the fire. Jeffrey-Shaw had fled to a nearby hotel, called a taxi and returned to London. A few days later he handed himself into a police station in London after detectives issued his photo and an appeal for him to contact police. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and charged.
In sentencing, HHJ Jeremy Stuart-Smith said that he believed Jeffrey-Shaw had lied about the threat of violence towards him and that he was involved in the disposal of Janet's body.
He said- "What you did was deeply shocking and callous beyond belief and at every stage since you set fire to the car in which she died, you have lied and lied in your attempt to evade all responsibility for what you did. But you are responsible for killing a young woman who did you no wrong. On the jury's verdict, the only reason you are not guilty of murder is because you did not have the human decency to check if the person in the boot of your car was dead or alive."
