Woman imprisoned for stealing from car parking company at Gatwick
A manager at an airport car park has been sent to prison for five years after stealing almost half a million pounds from them.
Ghazala Ashraf, 45, of Oakwood Road, Horley was found guilty of two counts of theft from her employer, APCOA, and two counts of money laundering.
At Lewes Crown Court, she was found guilty and was sentenced to a total of five years in prison.
Ashraf, who has worked at the airport car parking firm, based at Gatwick but not owned by the airport, since 2010, was a manager and periodically between 2010 and 2012, took money, either cash or credit card refunds from the company totalling £484,830.77. She requested money be held back from the banking process, this was placed to one side in the safe which was then removed periodically and deposited into her bank account or used to purchase goods. Refunds were made to her bank and credit cards using a machine within the office. Staff who worked under her were under the impression it was used to refill pay machines and were oblivious to what was actual happening.
Detective Inspector Andy Richardson said: "Ashraf used her position at the car parking firm to steal money, slowly but systematically from them. She used the money, which amounted to nearly £500,000, to buy properties abroad and make money from them. She abused her position within the company that she worked for and now will face time in prison. We are also seeking to make sure she pays back the money she took or seize her properties."

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, after a number of elderly people were targeted in an attempted telephone scam.

Ford absconder Derek Passmore, recaptured
A man who absconded from Ford Prison more than two-and-a-half years ago found himself back behind bars for Christmas after he was arrested in Hove on Christmas Eve.
Derek Passmore, now 50, was recaptured after failing to return to HMP Ford on 22 June, 2013 whilst released on temporary licence. He absconded after being sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an acquaintance in London in 1997.
PC Lewis Dines of the Chichester-based team leading the investigations on all absconders from HMP Ford said: "Passmore was released on a temporary licence from Ford prison and failed to return by the end of the allotted period. A significant amount of work involving teams in Sussex and colleagues in the Metropolitan Police Service was undertaken, but he maintained a low profile and remained evasive. However, we recently received information about his whereabouts, which led to his successful and uneventful recapture in the Hove area on Thursday 24 December."
Passmore has been charged with escaping lawful custody and has been detained at HMP Lewes. He will serve the remainder of his original sentence and also be sentenced for failing to return to return to HMP Ford.

RNLI Hayling Lifeboat RNLI LIFEBOAT
Time: 22:18
Weather: SSE F4 wind, mild for late Dec but sea temperature around 10 C
Incident: 2015 ends with a suicide attempt
The Hayling lifeboat was asked by UK Coastguard to go and stand by, close to Hayling Bridge, as a man was threatening to jump off into a fairly cold sea. The new D-class lifeboat was launched, but on its way up the harbour was informed by VHF radio that the man had jumped, closely followed by a police officer. The two men were carried by the tide to the West side of the bridge where they were able to cling onto a mooring buoy. The police officers colleague then threw them a lifebelt, and using the attached line pulled them both into the shore. So when the lifeboat arrived they were ashore and the casualty was being escorted back to the Ship Inn, so the lifeboat crew looked after the wet, cold, policeman. An ambulance arrived shortly after this and the casualty was taken to hospital, so the lifeboat was then stood down and returned to the station.
