WEDNESDAY 1st JULY 2015

SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR49489 / 2015
Time: 12.30am
Location: Tollgate Hill, Broadfield, Crawley
Incident: Attempted street robbery in Crawley
At about 12.30am a 26-year old local man was walking home along Tollgate Hill, Broadfield, Crawley, when he was set upon by two men who demanded money. When he refused, saying he had no money, they pushed him to the ground and began to search him. However they stopped and ran off when a car passed by.
One was in his 20s, stocky and about 5' 10". He was wearing a dark coloured hooded top with the hood up, black trainers and black gloves. The second man was very similar in age, build and height and was wearing a grey hooded top with the top up. Nothing was stolen and the man was shaken but unhurt.
Police would particularly like to speak to the occupant or occupants of the car that drove past, which clearly distracted the would-be robber, they would also like to hear from anyone who saw the two men in the area that night.

Woman four times over limit smashes car into home
Fortunately no one was hurt after Sue Dean crashed her silver Daihatsu Sirion into sheltered accommodation.
The 52-year-old has been given a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving after she lost control of her car at 11.35am on 11 June.
She had first driven into an off-duty police officer's car in nearby Elphinstone Road. The officers shouted at her to stop but instead she drove off. Dean turned into Baldslow Road, hit a parked car and then reversed at such speed that when she hit a road sign at the junction with Sherwood Close her Daihatsu lifted off the ground and smashed into the window of a block of sheletered accommodation.

When police breathalysed her she had 150 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - more than four times the 35 microgrammes legal limit.
Dean, of Hurrell Road, Hastings, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and failing to stop after an accident when she appeared before Magistrates today. She was banned from driving for three years and given a 16-week suspended prison sentence. She was also ordered to do 300 hours of community service and to pay £315.

Report received:
Yapton woman sentenced for defrauding elderly neighbour of £12,000
A Yapton woman has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for forging £12,850 worth of cheques belonging to an elderly neighbour.
Vicky Wilson, 42, of Bilsham Road, Yapton, befriended the vulnerable 94-year-old man who lived on the same caravan site and over several months she systematically signed cheques in his name on his bank account and addressed them to her own building society account.
Her crimes came to light in March this year when the manager of a company which checks on the welfare of people living on caravan sites across West Sussex was helping by going through his bank statement and came across these payments which the man had not authorised. Police enquiries swiftly led to Wilson's arrest and when interviewed she admitted everything.
She was sentenced at Chichester Crown Court today having admitted fraud by false representation at a previous hearing.
Detective Constable Paul Gilmour said; "This was a brazen crime, in which Wilson deliberately targeted her elderly neighbour, relying on his lack of attention to his financial affairs to help her get away with it. Fortunately the bank has refunded the money to the victim's account"

Smoke alarm saves home and pets
Three young people and two family pets had a lucky escape from a house fire in East Preston after the alarm was raised by a working smoke detector.
Firefighters were called to the terraced house on Mill Pond Way, East Preston, at 2.28pm after an electrical fire was sparked by a dishwasher. Smoke from the dishwasher quickly spread through the kitchen door but thanks to the early warning given by the smoke alarm, the two brothers and their friend, who were upstairs when the fire started, were able to escape safely from the property and call 999.
Two fire crews from Littlehampton and Worthing were immediately dispatched to the scene. On arrival firefighters discovered that two of the family's cats were still in the property so a team wearing breathing apparatus entered the smoke logged house to rescue the animals. One of the rescued cats was given oxygen therapy by firefighters before both were taken to vets. The young occupiers were uninjured.
The fire was extinguished using two hose reels and a covering jet and the house was ventilated using a positive pressure ventilation fan. The kitchen was extensively damaged by fire; and the remainder of the house was damaged by smoke. Support for the occupiers was provided at the scene by Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service volunteers.
Incident Commander Neal Temperley from Littlehampton Fire Station, said: "Once again, this incident highlights the value of having working smoke detectors in your home."

Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a 79-year-old man died at the scene opposite the garden centre at Rogers Farm, Findon, just before 8.40pm.

Police hunt man responsible for frenzied murder
Police are appealing for witnesses to the murder of a grandfather in Findon, near Worthing.
At about 8.40pm on Thursday, 16 July, believed to be Donald Lock, 79, was driving south on the A24 when he struck the rear of a car that was also travelling south, just past the junction with the Black Horse pub.
Mr Lock got out of his vehicle and was confronted by the driver of the other vehicle, who stabbed him repeatedly. The offender then got back into his car and drove away south on the A24.
Mr Lock, from Worthing, suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite paramedics working on him at the scene, he died shortly afterwards.
Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area and looking for anyone who could have any information that could help identify exactly what happened. They are also appealing for anyone who has CCTV at their home or business that covers the A24 between the Offington Corner roundabout at Worthing and the Longfurlong roundabout at Findon. In addition anyone that has a vehicle with a dashboard camera who was in the area at the time is asked to come forward.
Detective Superintendent Adam Hibbert, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "Mr Lock was the victim of a frenzied attack that he had no chance to defend himself against. The attacker has then driven off but at this stage we have a limited description of his vehicle. We are looking for an extremely dangerous man and need the public's help to identify and arrest him urgently."
Police are appealing for anyone who has any information about what happened to come forward immediately, no matter how unimportant you might think it is. It could be vital to our investigation. The attacker's vehicle is likely to have suffered minor damage to the rear. The attacker is likely to have had a substantial amount of blood on him after the murder. This could also be on his vehicle.
If you have any suspicions about someone, do not challenge them but instead call 999.
The A24 is likely to remain closed at Findon village for the foreseeable future while the investigation continues. Diversions are in place.

Woman jailed for falsely claiming she was raped
A woman has been convicted of perverting the course of justice after falsely reporting that she had been raped in Sussex in 2013.
Natalia Sytnik, 24, unemployed, now of Campbell Drive, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to one count of committing an act or series of acts with intent to pervert the course of justice by falsely reporting that she had been raped on November 9, 2013.
She appeared at Lewes Crown Court today and was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.
Sytnik was living at a multi-occupancy address in St Leonards, in November 2013, when she alleged that she had been raped by a man and a woman living at the address.
The couple were arrested, detained in custody for a number of hours, they were subject of intimate forensic swabs and interview, before being released on bail. During the course of the investigation it became abundantly clear to detectives that Sytnik was not telling the truth and was therefore subject herself to a full investigation. The couple were later released from bail without further action.
Detective Constable Naomi Morrison said: "All reports of sexual offences are taken very seriously and fully investigated. In this case it became clear that not only was there no evidence to support the claim, but all the evidence that we obtained pointed to her guilt. It is a very traumatic experience to be a victim of a sexual offence, and victims will always be given our full support, However it is also very traumatic to be falsely accused of such a serious offence."

Most wanted Sussex burglar jailed
Sussex's most wanted burglar has been jailed for more than five years for a series of break-ins across the south east.
Simon Knights broke into eight homes in Sussex, two in Kent and one in each of Surrey, Hampshire and Essex and attempted to break into another home in Sussex in a spree that ran from June 2014 to April 2015.
In each case the 39-year-old used the rail network to move from town to town dressed smartly in a jacket, shirt and trousers, committing burglaries and then getting the next train home.
He stole thousands of pounds worth of jewellery in the burglaries that police have been able to link to him.
But there could be other crimes that he committed that officers have not yet proved were done by Knights.
He was eventually arrested in Great Yarmouth on 26 June after a series of national and local appeals and a long-running investigation involving officers from Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, Essex and the Metropolitan Police.
Knights, who gave his address as Kirkley Cliff Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, pleaded guilty to 13 counts of burglary and one of attempted burglary when he appeared in court. He was jailed for five years and six months when he appeared at Chichester Crown Court today.

Brighton man's hefty parking bill
A Brighton man who flouted parking restrictions in the city by parking numerous vehicles knowing that their registrations could not be traced back to him has ended up with a bill of nearly £8000.
Julian King, 43, a company director of Withdean Road, Brighton, appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court on July 27 charged with three offences of fraudulently using a vehicle registration mark and one of possessing an article in connection with fraud. He was found guilty of defrauding Brighton and Hove City Council by parking numerous vehicles around the city in resident permit bays, loading bays and on double yellow lines dishonestly, knowing that the plates displayed on the vehicles could not be traced back to him through Brighton and Hove City Council's parking enforcement enquiries.
The court heard that he also evaded detection by concealing the tax disc in the vehicle on each occasion to prevent authorities establishing the correct owner's details. The offences involved several high value vehicles, including a Porsche, Bentley, Range Rover, Mercedes, Audi and BMWs. He was found guilty of using the vehicles to commit the offences on at least 45 occasions over a period of about five years. He was fined £3870 and costs of £2000, compensation was ordered to Brighton City Council of £2000 and there was a victim surcharge imposed of £120. A number of licence plates owned by King have been revoked by the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Agency.
PC Mark Bassett said: "While the offences in this case did stretch back over a number of years, when they came to light we were able to find the evidence we needed to bring about this successful prosecution. This wasn't a case of someone trying to get away with a quick stop somewhere they shouldn't or spending a little too long shopping. This was calculated fraud, pure and simple"

Man sentenced to 12 years for sexual attacks on two young women
A Crawley man has been sentenced to a total of 12 years imprisonment for sexually assaulting two teenage girls in the town.
22-year old Ronald Motlhokodise, of Lansbury Road, Broadfield, Crawley, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court having been convicted of both offences on 30 June after a six-day trial.
He had raped a 16-year old girl who he had met only days beforehand, after enticing her to his home on 20 August 2013. Police arrested and charged him with that offence.
In the early hours of 3 March this year, whilst on court bail awaiting trial for that offence, he met a 17-year old girl outside a hotel in Crawley High Street at which they were both staying, followed her back into her room and subjected her to a vicious sexual assault.
He was issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to last until further notice severely restricting his contact with women, and will be a registered sex offender for life.
Detective Constable Natalie Freeman said; "Motlhokodise is clearly a danger to young women he encounters. These were both casual acquaintances, in the second case he met the victim just minutes before he attacked her".
