RNLI Selsey Lifeboat SELSEY LIFEBOAT
Time: 10.36am
Incident: Lifeboat launched to vessel aground
The RNLI were paged at 10.36a.m. after the 57-foot yacht 'Living the Dream' broadcast an emergency call saying they had run aground south of Selsey Bill.
The Lifeboat launched at 10.46a.m. and headed south until a local fishing boat reported that the yacht was in fact one mile to the south west of Selsey Bill. Reached at 10.59a.m. crew checked that the man and woman aboard were well. The skipper thought that the rudder was damaged but reported no ingress of water.
The tide was flooding so the ILB crew kedged an anchor out from the yacht and because of the size of the vessel requested that the all-weather Lifeboat remain at readiness to launch. At 12.35 p.m. 'Living the Dream' floated free of the shingle bank and, after checking the engines, steering and any water ingress, the kedged anchor was recovered and the vessel was escorted to the Looe buoys and east towards safe waters then continued her passage to Brighton

Time: 7.05am
Location: BP service station, South Road, Hailsham
Incident: Countywide search for gang after robbery in Hailsham
Police are appealing for witnesses after three men robbed a delivery driver and stole tens of thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes.
At 7.05am today a gang of men in a white Ford Transit van pulled onto the forecourt of the BP service station forecourt in South Road, Hailsham, as a delivery was being made. The men ordered the driver to look away from them and then stole bags of cigarettes from his van. They drove off in their van, which had the registration number VE03 VGG, towards the A22 before stopping in Cacklebury Close. Two of the men then got out of the van and into a silver or grey car before the robbers drove both vehicles away.
The men were wearing yellow high visibility jackets, cream trousers and white socks. They were white and possibly Eastern European.
The delivery appears to have been targeted by the gang. Detectives believe it could be linked to a robbery in Faversham, Kent, on Monday,11 May.
Detective Sergeant Ross Bartlett said- "We think the men may have changed the numberplate of the van since the robbery so I am keen to speak to anyone who may have seen numberplates being changed or who has found any dumped. We are working with colleagues in neighbouring forces to see if the van has left the county but are also searching across Sussex in case they are still here. We urgently need to speak to anyone who may have seen the two vehicles being driven together or anyone who has any information at all. There is no information to suggest the men are violent but if you see them , dont approach them but instead call 999."

High value lawn mowers stolen
Police are appealing for information after lawn mowers worth more than £30,000 were stolen from Godfreys, a garden machinery specialist on the A22 at Lower Dicker.
Some time between 5.30pm yesterday and 6.45am today five John Deere X590 petrol lawn tractors and a 42-inch cutter deck were stolen. It is believed that the burglars approached the business from Hackhurst Lane and travelled across fields at the rear of the property, cutting hedges to allow them to them to take the machines away. A number of people would have been needed to move the mowers because of their size and weight. The thieves may have used chainsaws to cut through the hedging so these would have made a considerable amount of noise.

Bognor man convicted of assaulting Chichester taxi driver
A taxi ride from Portsmouth to Chichester proved very expensive for a passenger who assaulted the driver at the end of his journey.
Elliott Purser, 22, of Lichfield Gardens, Aldwick, Bognor Regis, took the trip in February 2015 after a night out in Portsmouth.
On arrival in Chichester and after arguing with driver Gabriel Muntaneau, Purser became violent and punched him in the head.
He appeared before Chichester magistrates today and denied a charge of assault by beating. But he was found guilty and given an 18 month condtional discharge. He was also told he must pay prosecution costs of £620, a victim surcharge of £15 and compensation of £50 to his victim. A collection order was made.
After the case, the officer who arrested Purser, PC Matt Chamberlain, said- "Thanks to closed circuit television cameras inside the taxi we were able to prosecute Purser even though he denied the attack."

An elderly woman was rescued from a kitchen fire last night thanks to a specialist smoke alarm fitted by the fire service in her Fishbourne home. Two fire crews from Chichester were called to the bungalow on Clay lane at 8pm after cooking caught fire and spread to nearby newspapers filling her home with toxic black smoke.
Fortunately, because West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service had carried out a Home Fire Safety Check at the property in July last year, the bungalow was protected by a Lifeline System with a specialist 'Firelink' smoke alarm. This meant that an operator at a 24-hr monitoring centre was automatically alerted to the fire and could place the 999 call to the Fire Service.
Arriving within 7 minutes of the 999 call, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus immediately entered the property and rescued the 87 year old occupier, who was confused and suffering with smoke inhalation. She was given oxygen therapy at the scene before being taken to hospital. The crews then swiftly extinguished the fire with a hose reel stopping it spreading beyond the kitchen.

A working smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you're awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke and will give you that early warning that could make the difference.
