FRIDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2014

SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR47416 / 2014
Littlehampton Burglar sentenced
A burglar broke into a house and fled but was arrested, prosecuted and then sentenced - all in less than 36 hours.
Kashif Judge entered a home in Terminus Road, Littlehampton, shortly before 8am on Friday, 7 November, and grabbed clothes and mobile phones before he was disturbed by the woman who lived there. The 42-year-old escaped wearing some of the victim's husband's clothes. She gave a description of Judge to police which was quickly circulated amongst officers out on patrol to try to track him down. Minutes later police were called to Tesco in Broad Piece, Littlehampton, where Judge had grabbed a bottle of wine from a shelf, took into the toilets and begun drinking it. He became aggressive when staff challenged him and police arrived, matching Judge to the description given by the victim in Terminus Road. Judge was arrested, questioned and then charged with breaking into the house and stealing the wine.
The next day Judge, of Inwood Road, Liss, Hampshire, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court. He was given a six-month suspended sentence, ordered to do 150 hours of community service and to pay £85 costs, an £80 victim surcharge and £257.99 compensation.
Judge was still wearing clothing stolen during the burglary when he was found at Tesco. The officers were able to match the first description given when he was in the house to the man they had stopped for the wine theft.

Lifeboats launched to Flares - or fireworks
Red flares were reported by a fishing boat entering Chichester Harbour and several members of the public. They were reported as being at the top of the Thorney Channel. Both lifeboats were launched with the Atlantic going to search up Thorney Channel and the D-Class searching up Emsworth Channel. Although the weather was clear and a bright moon came out it proved necessary for the Atlantic crew to let off parachute flares to search the shallower water to the east side of Thorney Channel. The Coastguard helicopter joined the search covering both channels and the East Head.
With many bonfires and fireworks being let off to the north of both channels it was decided that these had been mistaken for red flares, unless of course they had been red flares used as part of a private bonfire party

Police making enquiries after yachtsman's disappearance
An extensive search for a missing yachtsman, whose boat was found drifting at Brighton marina, has now been suspended.
Sussex Police has named the yachtsman as Len King, 74, from Alfriston. and is now treating his disappearance as a missing person enquiry.
Talking of his disappearance his wife Stephanie said: "Len is an experienced yachtsman and has been sailing since he was at least 20. Normally we go together but during the week if its calm weather he may go off by himself. He went off just before lunch. I was expecting him home for dinner time. I phoned him several times but his phone was unable to connect so I thought he was on his way back. I called the person who has a boat next to us and he thought we were away. I can't understand what has happened. He is a very experienced yachtsman. He has all his equipment doubled up and is always careful. That is the way he runs things."
Insp Roy Apps said: "It is an anxious time for the family. The search is currently suspended and we are liaising with his family as we investigate the circumstances of his disappearance. An experienced seaman Mr King had left Brighton Marina on his yacht on Sunday afternoon and it is unclear as to what has happened to him. A friend reported him missing to the Coastguard at around 9.50pm last night as he had not returned home. His Sunseeker boat was then found unmanned near the harbour wall at Brighton Marina.
An extensive search was carried out by the Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue teams, Shoreham, Newhaven and Brighton lifeboats along with the Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on Solent and this has now been suspended until new information comes to light."

RNLI Hayling Lifeboat HAYLING LIFEBOAT
Time: 13.45
Incident: Tragic death of a local windsurfer
Coastguards requested the launch of Hayling and Portsmouth Lifeboats due to a reported serious incident. The D-Class was launched and went to Hayling Bridge but was then re-directed to the area in Langstone Harbour behind the Esso Garage, a popular bay and safe for windsurfing. The Atlantic 85 was also launched to back up the D-Class and were joined by the Portsmouth Lifeboat which had also been launched, all arrived on the scene together.
A sailing dinghy crew had spotted a windsurfer rig floating in the water with no-one around but shortly after this discovered a body face down in the water. They managed to get the body on board their dinghy, raised the alarm and took him ashore.
Hayling First Responders were rapidly on scene and an Ambulance crew arrived and together they tried to resuscitate the casualty. The Coastguard Helicopter was paged as it was clear the situation was very serious. Mr Boyle was taken by helicopter to QA Hospital but sadly was declared dead on arrival, possibly from a cardiac arrest.
The Hayling Lifeboats recovered the windsurfing rig and handed it over to the Police on the scene. Both local windsurfers and the RNLI crews have expressed their shock and sadness that this incident has claimed the life of a seemingly fit and healthy 53yr old local man who has been named as Sean Boyle from Hilsea.

FIRE SERVICE REPORT
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging residents to keep their cooker tops clear following a fire in a Worthing flat this morning. The fire is believed to have started when an item left too close to the cooker hob caught light.
The occupier of the flat was out at the time but the alarm was raised after neighbours in a flat above heard a detector activating and the smoke began to affect their flat. They suffered minor smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital as a precaution. Two crews from Worthing arrived at the scene within 6 minutes of the 999 call and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using jets and hose reels. Although crews managed to extinguish the fire quickly the flat was left badly damaged. Support is being provided by the Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service.

Incident Commander at the scene, Lee Spencer-Smith, said afterwards:- "We can all have forgetful moments and we know that the controls for hobs can sometimes be knocked by children or pets so it's really important to ensure that hob tops are kept clear. Ideally, the power to the cooker should be switched off at the mains after use. This incident also highlights how important it is to have a working smoke alarm in your property. Even if your home is unoccupied, the sound of a smoke detector activating can alert neighbours or passers-by to a developing fire. Fires in the kitchen account for around two thirds of all house fires we attend. We'd encourage people, where possible, to get into the habit of shutting their kitchen doors. If a fire does break out it can significantly slow its spread and limit the damage to the rest of the property."
