Police officers got slightly more than they bargained for today when they went to a house in Brighton to secure a few firearms.

Sergeant Chris Lane said: "Let's say it wasn't our usual day at the office. We were told we might find two or three firearms at the house but were amazed to find 70. The late owner of them who lived at the house was obviously an avid gun collector."

RNLI Brighton Lifeboat BRIGHTON LIFEBOAT
Time: 1.24pm
Incident: Lifeboat launched to a person face-down in the water
Brighton Lifeboat was paged along with Shoreham Lifeboat to a report of a person face-down in the water to the East of Brighton Marina. The Lifeboat made best speed to Ovindean in difficult conditions. Once on scene, the crew was informed that the casualty was actually off Roedean and was being pushed around in the shore dump.
The lifeboat made it's way to the scene and could see that the casualty was still face down but within a hands reach of the beach. The conditions on scene were force 6 with 2-3 metre swells and a heavy shore dump onto the beach. Given the conditions Helmsman Dan Gurr decided not to risk any of his crew to attempt a sea recovery, so it was made by Sussex Police and Newhaven Coastguard.
Whilst the recovery was taking place both Brighton and Shoreham lifeboats searched from Rottingdean to Brighton Pier along the shoreline and up to a quarter of a mile off shore for any other persons that may have attempted to assist in the rescue or been with the casualty at the time. Nothing was found and both Lifeboats were stood down to return to station.

SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR46085 / 2014
Location: Lloyds TSB building, The Causeway, Goring
Incident: Rave disrupted at derelict office block in Worthing
Two generators and a large amount of sound equipment were seized by police who disrupted a planned rave in an abandoned building in Worthing tonight.
Police were alerted to people entering the old Lloyds TSB building in The Causeway in Goring-by-Sea just after 10.30pm. Officers arrived quickly at the scene and were able to deter people from entering. Three people were arrested as officers discovered that the sound equipment was being set up on the roof of the derelict office block.
Inspector Allan Lowe said: "Early notification from a member of the public enabled us to move quickly to close down this rave, which would have caused significant disruption to the local community. What was particularly disturbing was that hundreds of people were being drawn to the rave in what would have been a very hazardous environment. There are ceilings falling down, wires sticking out, numerous trip hazards and no indication of the state of electricity or water supplies inside. The dangers were enough to prevent a full search of the building until daylight and the consequences of having several hundred people inside in the dark, under the influence of drink or drugs and with no safety or evacuation precautions, are extremely worrying at the very least."
A 23-year-old woman from Worthing and a 22-year-old man of no fixed address were arrested on suspicion of burglary other than dwelling and criminal damage. An 18-year-old man from Goring-by-Sea was arrested on suspicion of burglary other than dwelling. All were later bailed until August 10.

Drink-driver jailed for killing cyclist
A woman who ran down and killed a cyclist and then drove for more than 5 miles in a wrecked car has been jailed for 7 years.
Alison Bowen was drunk and driving when she struck Paul Novak on the A21 in November last year. The 61-year-old struck him with such force that her windscreen shattered and the front of her Fiat Punto was caved in - but later told officers she thought she had only hit a badger. She then drove off, leaving Mr Novak in the road. She continued until she crashed off the road again.
Mr Novak, 50, of West Hill Road, St Leonards, died at the scene.
At Lewes Crown Court, Bowen, of Queen Elizabeth Close, Battle, pleaded guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention while over the prescribed limit. She was jailed and banned from driving for 2 years. She will have to pass an extended test before she can drive again.
Ann Novak, Mr Novak's mother, said: "My only son Paul had his life snuffed out in seconds through no fault of his own. No sentence will ever be enough to take away the pain I feel that I will not get the chance to spend the rest of my life with him."

HAYLING LIFEBOAT
Time: 15.41
Incident: 10 year old saved from drowning
On an idyllic Sunday, 13 July, with a gentle breeze and bright sunshine, five young friends went swimming off Eastoke Point and one 10 year old girl was lucky to be saved by the prompt action of a man from N Hayling, and the combined rescue services.
Solent Coastguard received a call from the mother of one of the group reporting that two of her children and three others were being taken by the strong ebbing tide away from the beach and out of the harbour. In fact Robbie Humphries, one of the group and a non-swimmer had raised the alarm.

Air ambulance landing with Hayling Rescue boat
Meanwhile the Chichester Harbour patrol boat was only about 300m away from the swimmers and reacted quickly to the call. Hayling Rescue rib also was on the scene and the Hayling RNLI Lifeboat was launched and went to the area. By this time the 10 year old girl was being supported by a 'good Samaritan' who had swum out to her and was supporting her in the water. The Harbour patrol vessel recovered her and due to her condition immediately took her back to the RNLI Lifeboat Station. There two crew members took her into the station and made her comfortable. Brittany Jones, who is a crew member of both Hayling and Portsmouth RNLI and a trained lifeguard, described her as very cold and due to her immersion and suffering from hypothermia, she was hyperventilating, oxygen was used to restore normal breathing.
The Launch Authority at the Lifeboat Station requested an ambulance to attend and the Hayling First responders came to assist, arriving before the ambulance. Because the ambulance felt it was taking too long to reach the Station they paged the Air Ambulance which also arrived. The decision was made to take all five to hospital by ambulance. - Full report

Do you recognise this man?
Police are still trying to identify man's body found on beach at Camber, near Rye
Almost two years after a man's body was found washed up on the beach at Camber, near Rye, police are still trying to find out who he was. In a fresh appeal for information, this facial reconstruction has been made in the hope that someone may recognise him. He was found on 22 November, 2012. The case has been referred to the National Missing Persons Bureau and DNA checks have been made periodically, but all to no avail. The man was white, about 5'8", with size 9 feet. He had distinctively shaped teeth, with a noticeable underbite. When found, he was wearing a pair of underpants carrying the brand name Athena on the waistband. It is thought he may have been in the sea for some time.
Anyone who may know who the man is should phone Sussex Police on 101 and ask for their information to be referred to the coroner's officer at Hastings police station.

Tangmere teenager jailed for causing death by dangerous driving
A teenager has been jailed for four years after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
Harry Smith, aged 18, of Haleybridge Walk, Tangmere, appeared at Chichester Crown Court for sentencing after he last month admitted causing death by dangerous driving and two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in a fatal collision on the A285 at Halnaker in September 2013. Judge Christopher Parker QC also disqualified Smith from driving for 4 years and ordered him to take an extended re-test before holding a licence again.
The court heard that Smith was driving a Vauxhall Corsa car travelling south, when it came off the road and overturned. Passenger Jasmine Elkasmi, 16, of Carlton Avenue, Bognor, died of her injuries. Two other 16-year-old girl passengers who were in the car were seriously injured, one being left paralysed from the waist down and other suffering facial and dental injuries. Neither can be named for legal reasons.
Afrer the hearing, Sergeant Paul Wood, of the Arundel road policing unit, said: "Smith was 17 at the time of the collision and he had only held his driving licence for about seven weeks. He had been stopped by police before the collision on a number of occasions due to the manner of his driving and he had been issued with a section 59 warning, which meant that if he had been stopped again, his vehicle would have been seized. A girl died as a result of his dangerous driving and 2 girls were left with serious injuries, one of them life-changing."

Gatwick PCSO guilty of theft and misconduct
A PCSO who used her knowledge of Gatwick to steal thousands of pounds from passengers travelling from the Sussex airport has been found guilty of theft and misconduct in public office.
Canterbury Crown Court heard how Alexis Scott approached passengers as they were about to go through the final gate on to their flight and asked how much cash they were carrying with them. She advised some of them that were carrying more than the maximum amount allowed and 'confiscated' the balance telling them that they could claim it back when they returned. She then placed the money under her hat and went back to the police station to remove it.
Her crimes came to light quite quickly as returning passengers started to ask various airport authorities for their money back. Scott, from Plumstead, London, was arrested and a complex investigation showed that she had stolen more than £15,000 from seven victims.
Today, after a trial lasting just over three weeks, the jury found her guilty of six offences of theft and one of misconduct in public office. She was found not guilty of one count of theft. She was remanded in custody for sentencing on a date to be confirmed.
A Sussex Police internal disciplinary investigation took place last year and as a result Scott attended a gross misconduct hearing on 16 July 2013, and was dismissed immediately.

Incident: Overdosed man found dead in West Worthing flat
At 11.40pm police were called to a flat in Rowlands Road, West Worthing, after reports that a man had died there.
On arrival officers assisted ambulance personnel to get into the flat, and inside the body of a 38-year-old man was found in a bathroom. It appeared that he had died following a drug overdose, possibly heroin. A post mortem examination of the body will be held. The coroner has been informed.
Detective Inspector Dave Wardley Wilkins, of the Sussex Police priority crime team, said- "This is one of three deaths in West Sussex in as many days, all of which are believed to have involved drugs. There is no reason to link them at this stage, but it is clearly something we are mindful of as we await the results of post mortem examinations and forensic tests in each case."
