SUSSEX POLICE report - Ref: PR45107 / 2014
Incident: Attempted fraud on East Grinstead woman
A 74-year-old woman almost fell prey to a conman pretending to be a London police officer who tried to scam her out of cash in East Grinstead.
The victim received a call at 12.10pm in Badgers Way from a man who said he was a police officer from Hammersmith. He had arrested someone who was in possession of her bank card and there had been three transactions made on her account. When she checked her handbag and found her cards she became upset and suspicious. The caller said she needed to cancel her card he would phone her back. She phoned her sister and when they checked with her bank, they discovered no money had been withdrawn or transactions made. They then reported the call to Sussex police and discovered it was a scam.
Detective Inspector Mark Cullimore said: "Fortunately this woman did not fall prey to this scam. Never give out your bank or card details to someone who has contacted you on your home phone unsolicited. The caller keeps the line open and will pretend to be from whoever you think you have just rung, so if you have any suspicions do not use the phone you have just been called on. Use a mobile or someone else's phone or wait at least 10 minutes before trying to call. Please pass this message on to anyone you know who may not be aware of this particular type of targeted fraud to prevent any vulnerable friends or family members from becoming victims."
Anyone who has any information about this incident should call police on 101 quoting serial 0716 of 01/4.

20-year sentence for assaults on women
A West Sussex man has been sentenced to a total of 20 years imprisonment for a series of sexual offences against three women.
Jason Burgess, 42, unemployed, of no fixed address, appeared for sentencing at Lewes Crown Court today having been found guilty the previous day of all 10 offences with which he had been charged.
These were four rapes, one attempted rape, one sexual assault, one common assault, one assault by beating, one indecent exposure and one sexual assault by penetration. The offences, involving three women aged from their mid-20s to early fifties, took place between April 2011 and June 2013.
One of the rapes took place in Petworth, but all other offences happened in the Haywards Heath area.
Detective Constable Steve Shaw said: "Burgess wormed his way successively into the womens' lives over a period of time and then abused the trust they had placed in him. He then moved on to his next victim when it suited him. He showed all the traits of a sexual predator.

Police warning over missing Bognor man
An elderly man who has gone missing from his home in Sussex is believed to have travelled to the Hertfordshire area and police are warning that they are concerned for his welfare and also those who may come into contact with him.
Douglas Byelong, 74, has not been seen since he left his home in Bersted, Bognor Regis, on Thursday evening, April 3. However, police have information to suggest that he may have been in the St Albans area on Friday.

He is described as white, 5' 9", of medium build, mostly bald with some white hair, blue eyes and wears glasses.
Detective Chief Inspector Tanya Jones, West Sussex Division CID, said: "While we don't think Mr Byelong is an immediate danger to the public - more to himself - he does feel that he is a younger man and we would recommend that anyone who sees him or knows where he is should not approach him, but call 999 immediately. Please quote the Sussex Police serial 1569 of 03/04

Barnham couple sentenced for neglect and fraud
A Barnham couple have been sentenced for systematically neglecting an elderly relative in their care.
One of the defendants has also been sentenced for fraud.
Paul Schmidt, 52, a motor trade mechanic, and his partner Amanda Whelan, 38, both of Hedge End, Barnham, appeared in custody at Hove Crown Court today, having been convicted in February after a two-week trial at the same court. Schmidt was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for wilful neglect, contrary to the Mental Capacity Act, and eight months for obtaining approximately £6700 from fraud by false representation. The sentences will run consecutively. Whelan was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, suspended for two years, for wilful neglect. She was also ordered to do 160 hours unpaid work within 12 months.
Schmidt's mother, now aged 87, came to live with them in 2010, but subsequently police and social services began to receive reports that she was not being properly cared for. Friends and family became frustrated and called the police. Eventually, in August 2011, social services and the local GP got into the property to see her.
She was extremely thin, her toe nails were severely overgrown, she was unkempt and living in dirty

conditions. Social Services removed her for her own welfare and the by now frail woman, weighing less than 6 stones, was taken into care where she now lives in a safe environment and a much improved condition. Schmidt and Whelan were then arrested.
Detective Constable Emma Fields said: "Further evidence was obtained from the victim's bank account. Several cheques and card transactions were made on the account which were not for her. Paul Schmidt admitted to writing and signing the cheques. This was a blatant case of heartless exploitation and neglect of a very vulnerable person, who deserved love and care but received just the opposite."

Fire & Rescue Report
SMOKE ALARM SAVES WOMAN FROM FIRE
A woman from Walberton was able to escape safely from a flat fire in the early hours of this morning thanks to a working smoke alarm. Firefighters from Arundel and Bognor were called to the flat above the Holly Tree Pub in The Street, Walberton at 1.36am this morning after a fire started in a tumble dryer on the 1st floor.
The occupier, a woman in her forties, was asleep in bed when tea towels, left in the machine following a drying cycle, ignited. Thankfully, the flat was fitted with a working smoke alarm which activated and alerted the woman to the developing fire giving her the time she needed to escape safely.
On arrival firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and extinguished the blaze using a hose reel and covering jet. The woman, suffering from mild smoke inhalation, was given oxygen therapy by the fire crew at the scene but did not need hospital treatment.
Incident Commander from Arundel Fire Station, Richard Tout, said afterwards: "This is another example of where a working smoke alarm has potentially saved a life. The lady was asleep in bed and had the smoke alarm not alerted her, this fire could have had tragic consequences. Because the smoke alarm gave that vital early warning, the woman closed her internal doors, preventing the fire from spreading, and escaped safely.
We would also like to remind people about the danger of leaving appliances like tumble dryers, washing machines or dishwashers running overnight or while out. They can be a potential fire risk because of their high wattage, friction and motors."
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service offer free Home Fire Safety Checks where firefighters visit homes by appointment to give safety advice and, where appropriate, fit smoke detectors or other specialist fire detection equipment.

Incident: Two young men lost in the dark
Solent Coastguards received a 999 call from two men in their early 20's who were not sure exactly where they were but knew they were somewhere on the E Head peninsula. It was a dark night with a cold NE wind and the tide was coming in, so with some urgency the two lifeboats were launched. The Atlantic 85 started a search along the E Head shoreline, and the D-Class went into the shallower water in Snowhill Creek. Shortly after this a second call was made to the Coastguards with the men saying they could see flashing blue lights so the lifeboat crew knew they were close to them. They were soon discovered in the tidal zone of Snowhill Creek and the D-Class took them on board. Having checked that they were OK and not needing medical help they were taken to E Head and handed over safe and sound into the care of the local Selsey Coastguard Unit.

Bognor Regis householders alerted to telephone scammers
Fraudulent phone scammers have again been targeting householders in and around Bognor Regis, with more than half-a-dozen incidents reported in the past two days. Frequently, the bogus caller claims to be a PC Baker from Paddington Green police station, investigating suspicious use of bank cards at a leading London department store, or may pretend to be a bank official. The intended victim is asked to disclose personal details or to withdraw money from their bank account which an authorised courier or taxi driver will then collect.
On Tuesday, 8 April a 61-year-old local man lost £5,000 to this type of activity.
Under no circumstances would the police arrange collection of bank cards or money from your home address in this manner.

Police search for absconder from Ford Prison
Police are searching for 54-year old Kevin Brown, who absconded from Ford Prison in West Sussex on Thursday 10 April.
Brown is described as white, 6'1" and of muscular build, with short dark cropped hair. When last seen that morning he was wearing prison clothes, a green t-shirt with orange shoulder patches and light green trousers, but may well have discarded them since then.
He was serving a sentence of life imprisonment imposed at the Old Bailey in 2007 for conspiracy to rob and firearms offences.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Wardley-Wilkins of Sussex Police said: "We have been making widespread enquiries to establish the background to Brown's disappearance and to find him, especially across the South East where he has family and associates. There is currently no evidence that Brown poses a direct physical threat to members of the public, but in view of the seriousness of his offences, including a history of violent offences, we advise anyone who knows where he is, or who has any other information, not to approach him but to contact the police right away."
